The Florida Supreme Court gave the family of a high school athlete stricken on a soccer field the chance to prove that school personnel treated him carelessly.

In its 5-2 decision Thursday the court stopped short of requiring all Florida schools to use the defibrillators they are legally compelled to keep on campus. This issue is the crux of the negligence case the family of Abel Limones Jr. filed against the Lee County School Board after the 15-year-old soccer player collapsed and suffered severe brain damage on Nov. 13, 2008.
