The World Health Organization just declared an end to its global health emergency for Zika, and officials in Florida no longer classify Miami Beach as an active Zika transmission zone.

As late as last month, roughly 1½ square miles in Miami Beach was classified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an area pregnant women should avoid. All four transmission zones in the Miami area were deemed clear of continuing infections Dec. 9. But new studies released by the CDC suggest that severe birth defects caused by Zika can emerge months after birth.
