A jury has rendered a verdict in a smoker liability case, but the award was radically less than what the plaintiff sought.

The estate of Thomas Hardin, 74, who had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and died in 2012, sought $12 million to $20 million from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. The estate claimed Hardin started smoking at 9 before government-mandated warnings, and he displayed classic nicotine addiction signs.
