A 54-year-old exterminator and his wife have received a six-figure award after he was unjustifiably jailed. In June 2010, Bruce Lurone Sanders, 54, was fishing in Port Everglades when he was cited by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers for catching two undersized fish. After a warrant check, Sanders was accused of having an outstanding warrant and was incarcerated for 31 days at Broward County Jail. Sanders sued both the FFWCC and Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel. The FFWCC settled with Sanders. The jury concluded that Sanders was not the person who had an outstanding warrant and determined Sanders’ damages were $200,000 and his wife Venita G. Sanders’ damages were $12,000 for a $212,000 total award.
