A jury decided a stent manufacturer was not liable for a woman’s hemiplegia and eventual death.

Margaret Horrillo, then 71, underwent a renal artery stenting procedure to treat stenosis. A Formula 418 biliary stent manufactured by Cook Inc. was used. Horrillo suffered a stroke within 24 hours of the procedure, resulting in left-sided hemiplegia. She died four years later. The estate claimed Cook marketed and promoted the off-label use of the stent in renal arteries despite knowledge of an increased risk of stroke. It alleged the stent came without adequate warnings.
