The family of a motorcyclist who was killed when he collided with a tractor-trailer recovered more than $14.1 million.

Carl Simmons, 29, was riding a 2004 Yamaha Mitsubishi motorcycle in Orlando when Roger Wirick tried to make a left turn in front of him. Simmons collided with the rear of Wirick’s trailer. The estate alleged Wirick was driving in excess of federally mandated hours of service aimed at preventing accidents due to driver fatigue. It noted Wirick had only eight hours of sleep in the past 30 hours.
