A jury awarded $30 million to a woman who claimed an injured bladder suffered during a hysterectomy led to sepsis and other serious conditions.

Laura Haughie went to Wellington Regional Medical Center in Wellington for a laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy. Obstetrics and gynecology specialists Gregory Latchaw and David Adler performed the procedure, discharging Haughie from the hospital four days later. Four days after that, Haughie was suffering from sepsis, renal failure, hypoxia, gastrointestinal bleed and anemia. Her counsel alleged Latchaw and Adler removed a Foley catheter from her bladder too soon after surgery, which caused a repaired bladder suture line to open.
