A jury awarded $1 million to the mother of a woman who she claimed died after she was improperly administered potassium.

Dione Mae Allen, 19, was admitted to the Heart of Florida Hospital in Haines City with complaints of fever and dizziness. She died the next day of hyperkalemia, which is caused by abnormally high levels of potassium in the blood. The estate claimed cardiologist Johnson Massey misdiagnosed Allen with needing more potassium because old test results indicated an electrolyte imbalance. It claimed Allen’s potassium level was normal, and she didn’t need more potassium. Massey was blamed for administering a lethal dose of potassium to Allen.
