Affirming the recommendation of the city’s zoning board, Miami city commissioners dealt a possibly crippling blow to plans for a 58-story LED billboard tower in view of highway drivers north of downtown.

In a 4-1 vote Thursday, commissioners stripped a section of the zoning code allowing for such a project. Commissioners also unanimously declined to adopt a measure that would have provided a new permitting pathway for a so-called media tower in one of Miami’s poorest neighborhoods. A second and final vote on both matters is expected next month.
