A coalition of labor and progressive activists is looking to put a hurdle in front of the Miami Worldcenter developers, demanding a key approval be deferred until the project offers a more generous package of wage and job guarantees to the poor of Miami.
The South Florida leaderships of national unions AFL-CIO, UniteHere! and SEIU, as well as several faith-based groups, are spearheading the effort. The activists are asking county commissioners defer creating a community development district for the project, suggesting such an approval be tied to a commitment from the developer to offer all workers on the project a “living wage.” The first vote on creating a CDD is expected Tuesday. The coalition also wants the developer to make ironclad promises to hire workers locally, pursue agreements with organized labor and pay to train unemployed locals.
