What information does American Lawyer Media, Inc. gather and/or track about you?
Registration: When you register to receive American Lawyer Media, Inc. services, whether those services are free (such as People on the Move or Business Briefs) or paid (such as business leads and court information), American Lawyer Media, Inc. requires that you supply your full name, e-mail address, contact information, and a unique subscriber ID. American Lawyer Media, Inc. also requires demographic information (e.g. whether you are an attorney and for what type of entity you work). Customers must also agree to the Terms and Conditions of Use applicable to the service for which they are registering. In some instances, we also collect credit card information to bill subscribers for premium services.
Anonymous Information: American Lawyer Media, Inc. may also gather anonymous information, which may be used by American Lawyer Media, Inc. or shared with third parties. This information does not personally identify you but may be helpful for improving the services we offer. Generally this information is collected through "traffic data" and may entail the use of "cookies," "IP addresses," or other numeric codes used to identify a computer.
Cookies: "Cookies" give users a special, random ID that are small text files, which are stored on the hard drive of a user's computer. American Lawyer Media, Inc. employs cookies to recognize you and your access privileges for certain locations on the American Lawyer Media, Inc. sites, such as the Practice Centers, as well as to track site usage. Subscribers who do not accept cookies from the American Lawyer Media, Inc. sites cannot access many areas of American Lawyer Media, Inc.'s group of Web sites. IP Addresses: American Lawyer Media, Inc. also logs IP addresses for systems administration and troubleshooting purposes. (Your IP address indicates the location of your computer on the Internet.) We do not log IP addresses to track your session, nor do we link IP addresses to anything personally identifiable.
Credit Card Information: If you use a credit card to pay for a American Lawyer Media, Inc. subscription, we will retain your credit card information in house in order to renew your account, in the event you elect to renew your subscription or your business data agreement.
What does American Lawyer Media, Inc. do with the information it gathers and/or tracks?
Statistical Analysis and Banner Advertising: American Lawyer Media, Inc. may perform statistical analyses of user behavior in order to measure interest in the various areas of our site (for product development purposes) and to inform advertisers as to how many consumers have seen or "clicked" their advertising banners. American Lawyer Media, Inc. also uses demographic information to allow advertising banners on our Web site to be targeted to the readers for whom they are most pertinent. This means that readers see advertising that is most likely to interest them, and advertisers send their messages to people who are most likely to be receptive, improving both the user's experience and the effectiveness of the ads. Account Maintenance: American Lawyer Media, Inc. may utilize the contact information you provided at registration, such as your telephone number and e-mail address, to contact you regarding account status, changes to the subscriber agreement, and to confirm registration.
Service Updates and Promotions: Using the contact information and e-mail addresses provided at registration, American Lawyer Media, Inc. periodically sends promotional messages to its users about services offered by American Lawyer Media, Inc. and other divisions within the American Lawyer Media, Inc. group of companies, and notifies users of new features or changes that may be made to American Lawyer Media, Inc.'s services. Compliance with Law: American Lawyer Media, Inc. may release information if it is required to do so by law or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to: (1) comply with the law or comply with legal process served on American Lawyer Media, Inc.; and (2) protect and defend the legitimate business interests, rights or property of American Lawyer Media, Inc., it's users, advertisers, customers, sponsors, advertisers or affiliates.
Vendors: American Lawyer Media, Inc. may on occasion use third-party vendors to assist it in performing its business functions, such as mailing statements to subscribers, editing user lists, processing data and payments, and providing customer service. Personal information may be shared with these businesses or individuals to allow them to do perform their assigned functions, but is limited to that information needed to perform the assigned function, and may not be used for any other purpose.
Organizational Changes: Should American Lawyer Media, Inc. undergo a sales, merger, consolidation, change in control, transfer of substantial assets, reorganization or liquidation, American Lawyer Media, Inc.'s accumulated customer information will be treated as an asset and, like other business assets, subject to transfer to or acquisition by a third party.
Promotional Offers: Occasionally, American Lawyer Media, Inc. shares data collected about subscribers with other divisions within the American Lawyer Media, Inc. group of companies or third parties whose products or services we feel may be of interest to you. Many of our subscribers find these mail or e-mail promotions valuable, whether they are shopping for merchandise, taking advantage of a special offer, or purchasing unique services. Customer Requests for Personal Information: Upon your request, American Lawyer Media, Inc. will provide you with its record of the personal information you gave us at registration. For security reasons, this information will only be sent to the e-mail address on file for the subscriber ID associated with it.
Letters to the Editor: If you send American Lawyer Media, Inc. personal correspondence, such as e-mails or letters, or if other users or third parties send correspondence to American Lawyer Media, Inc. about your activities or postings on a American Lawyer Media, Inc. Web site, American Lawyer Media, Inc. may collect such information into a file specific to you. All submissions become property of American Lawyer Media, Inc.
A Special Note About Children & Non-U.S. Users
American Lawyer Media, Inc. does not provide services for children, and children are not eligible to use American Lawyer Media, Inc.'s premium or paid-for services. We ask that minors not submit any personal information to us. If you are a minor, you should use this service in conjunction with a parent or guardian.
All users, including those users who access American Lawyer Media, Inc. from a country other than the U.S., agree that the laws of the State of Florida shall govern any dispute, include those arising from American Lawyer Media, Inc.'s use of personal information or otherwise relating to privacy, as specified in the Terms of Use.
Opting-Out, Corrections and Cancellations
Upon request, American Lawyer Media, Inc. will (a) remove you and your personal information from our database, thereby canceling your registration and/or subscription; (b) correct personal information that you state is erroneous; or (c) permit you to "opt out" of further e-mail contact (excepting notification of major changes to the service) while still allowing access to the site.
