Outgoing president honors chief justice, two South Florida attorneys

n one of his last official acts as president of The Florida Bar, West Palm Beach litigator and outgoing Bar President John “Jay” White bestowed the 2009 president’s Award of Merit upon Miami litigator David Bill Rothman, West Palm Beach attorney Gregory William Coleman and Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Peggy A. Quince.

Rothman is a member of the Bar’s board of governors for Miami-Dade County and is a past president of the Dade County Bar Association and the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He also is an adjunct professor at the University of Miami School of Law.

Coleman is also a member of the Florida Bar’s board of governors for Palm Beach County and is a liaison on the Bar’s civil procedure rules committee and its annual convention committee. He is a member of the house of delegates for the American Bar Association.

White also honored Fort Lauderdale transactional attorney Adele Stone with the G. Kirk Haas Humanitarian Award. Stone is president of the Florida Bar Foundation and is the law partner and wife of Jesse Diner, president of The Florida Bar. Stone is a name partner at Atkinson Diner Stone Mankuta & Ploucha.

She is also co-chair of the pro bono committee, is a past president of the Legal Aid Service of Broward County and is the former chair of the Bar’s professional ethics committee. The award recognizes attorneys for their service to the community and commitment to pro bono work.

Stone was also honored with the 2009 Justice Harry Lee Anstead Award for the Florida Bar Board Certified Lawyer of the Year, which recognizes her for professionalism and excellence in the practice of law. She is the first woman to win the award since its creation in 2005.

The Florida Bar and the Florida Bar Foundation honored state Rep. Marcelo Llorente of Miami with the Florida Bar Legislative Award for his work in helping to pass legislation that waives civil court filing fees for indigent litigants. Llorente practices in the real property, public finance and state and local government sections in Bryant Miller & Olive’s Miami office.

State Rep. Anitere Flores of Miami was honored by the Florida Law Related Education Association with the 2009 Education for Democracy Award for her support of civic and law related education in Florida. Flores is a lawyer and director of community partnerships at Florida International University.

The Florida Bar’s general practice, solo and small firm section honored Mary Cagle with the Walter S. Crumbley Award. The award recognizes a lawyer for outstanding service to the legal profession. Cagle, who is based in Miami, serves as statewide director of Children’s Legal Services for the Florida Department of Children and Families.
