Supreme Court
Justice O'Connor dings Gibson Dunn on Letterman Show

June 26, 2009 By: Brian Baxter

Sandra Day O'Connor on the Late Show

hile plugging her new children's book on the Late Show with David Letterman, former U.S. Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor revealed her favorite speaking engagement while on the high court.

Although never mentioning the firm by name, O'Connor took a good-natured shot at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, telling Letterman how gratifying it was to give a speech as a Supreme Court justice at the 100th anniversary of the firm that offered her a job as a legal secretary after she graduated third in her class from Stanford Law School in 1952. (In fairness to Gibson, Dunn, several other firms didn't offer any position to O'Connor.)

Here's a snippet of the interview, via The Insider.

Other noteworthy sound bites:

-- O'Connor thought that she "was going to die" when she shook the hand of fellow justice--and former football star--Byron "Whizzer" White. "It was like I had put my hand in a vise . . . tears squirted out of my eyes," O'Connor said. "It was very embarrassing, my first day on the Court, and there I am in tears."

-- O'Connor seemed pleased with President Obama's nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, telling Letterman that she was glad another woman would be on the Court. O'Connor added that the Supreme Court of Canada has four women justices, "and they seem to do just fine."

-- When Letterman asked O'Connor whether she ever looked back on some cases the Court handled during her tenure and thought, "Oh, we bungled that one," O'Connor smiled and admitted she did, but declined to tell the comedian what cases they were.
