Review 100: Methodology and Charts

June 23, 2008 By: Research by Vala Issa
Review 100: 2008

Caveat Reader: The information provided in the charts accompanying this section is based on voluntary disclosures by the law firms.

Review 100 is a list of the largest 100 law firms in Florida. It is based on the results from surveys sent to more than 300 firms. Based on the responses received, firms are ranked based on the total number of attorneys in the state.

Financial Survey

The financial survey is a snapshot of South Florida’s top-grossing law firms. The Daily Business Review surveyed firms with a major South Florida presence. Firms on the list voluntarily provided their financial data. Firms that rely primarily on personal injury and product liability litigation were not included.

For purposes of uniformity, gross revenue represents legal fees billed and collected in a firm’s fiscal year. It does not include disbursements or soft costs.

National firms are included if they generate substantial revenue in South Florida. Dollar figures are from the firms’ latest full fiscal year, and most coincide with the calendar year.

Profit per equity partner and compensation per partner are averages. The amounts do not reflect sums distributed to partners. Some partners may receive far less, while founding partners and major rainmakers may well exceed the average.

When calculating revenue per lawyer, of counsel lawyers are counted with associates as salaried employees whose compensation is an element of overhead costs.

Attorney numbers were reported as of last Aug. 31.

Correction:The Akron, Ohio-based law firm Roetzel & Andress was inadvertently omitted from the Review 100 chart of the largest law firms in Florida. The firm would have ranked 33rd. Its Web address is www.ralaw.com, Timothy J. Ochsenhirt is managing partner. The firm employs 56 attorneys in Florida, 24 associates and one of counsel. The firm did not give a partnership breakdown. It maintains Florida offices in Fort Myers, Naples, Orlando and Tallahassee.
