iane Ward, who has been practicing law for more than 20 years, was formally sworn in last Friday as a Miami-Dade Circuit Court judge.
Ward, 50, was elected to the post when she defeated incumbent Alan Postman in the September election after a hotly contested campaign. She defeated Postman despite his campaign war chest that was nearly three times larger than hers. Postman, 62, had been on the bench for 12 years.
Born in New York City, Ward earned her law degree at the University of Miami in 1982. She worked in the trial division of the Miami-Dade County public defender’s office for six years before opening her own law office in 1988. She initially had a general practice that ranged from personal injury to family law, but in more recent years she focused on criminal law.
Ward is serving in the juvenile division.
