State Sen. Frank Artiles, R-Miami, resigned Friday amid a firestorm over vulgar and racially charged comments he made about fellow members of the Senate.

Sen. Bill Galvano, a Bradenton Republican who will be the next Senate president, confirmed Artiles submitted his resignation. He had earlier dismissed calls by the legislative black caucus and others for him to quit. Artiles already lost a committee chairmanship as punishment before making a three-minute apology on the Senate floor Wednesday.
