A Broward Circuit Court jury awarded $46.5 million to a Fort Lauderdale smoker with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who sued R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.
The jury awarded $25 million in punitive damages Tuesday and $21.5 million in compensatory damages Friday to Tom Ryan and his wife, Bettye. The compensatory award exceeded the $20 million the Ryans’ attorneys requested in closing argument.
