Pharmaceutical companies Anda Inc. and Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. must pay for their own defense against a $430 million lawsuit filed by the state of West Virginia accusing the two firms of supplying prescription drugs that contributed to the state’s “pill mill” and addiction problems.

Chief U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore in Miami issued a summary judgment Monday in favor of four insurance companies that provided coverage to Florida-based Anda and New Jersey-based Watson, which claimed their policies required the insurers to defend them against the West Virginia complaint.
