In the wee hours of a morning last spring, Richard Lara sat in the home of his future boss, the chairman and chief executive officer of Spanish Broadcasting System Inc., basking in a huge jury trial win.

In 2015, he had begun defending SBS executive vice president Jesus Salas against fraud and other allegations in a civil lawsuit brought by Salas’ former client and ex-girlfriend, Latin pop star Katherine Alexander. Following a three-week trial in Miami-Dade Circuit Court in spring 2016, the jury found no liability on Salas’ part, awarding nothing to Alexander, who had demanded $10 million.
