An unflappable and down-to-earth judge in Broward County who became well known for presiding over bond court hearings broadcast daily over the internet is moving on after eight years.

Circuit Judge John “Jay” Hurley, who often wore a bow tie and bantered with a wide variety of defendants, estimates he presided over 200,000 hearings for defendants making their initial court appearances. Hurley will now handle criminal trials and other matters that are not necessarily streamed online. He is being replaced by Judge Michael Davis.
