A state appeals court Wednesday agreed R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. should pay $7.88 million in compensatory damages to the estate of a smoker who died of lung cancer but ordered reconsideration of a $30 million award for punitive damages.

The ruling by the Fourth District Court of Appeal said attorneys for Joan Schoeff, the widow of the late James Schoeff, pleaded with a Fort Lauderdale jury to limit punitive damages to $25 million. But the jury went ahead and awarded the higher amount.
