The Miami office of Lawyers for Children America is facing its second major hurdle this year—a $45,000 funding shortfall it hopes to alleviate by persuading South Florida attorneys to donate an hour’s worth of income to support its mission.

The nonprofit works on behalf of abused, neglected and abandoned children forced out of their homes. It’s part of a national initiative founded in 1995 with support from former Attorney General Janet Reno to operate with the help of lawyers and other volunteers. In any given year, the Miami agency represents 400 children in foster care, providing pro bono legal representation to about 100 children while advocating for another 300.
