Based on an appellate opinion issued Wednesday, the Broward County sheriff might have trouble collecting payments on bills for services performed for the city of Fort Lauderdale.
The Fourth District Court of Appeal ruled the city has sovereign immunity that could block the sheriff’s claims, reversing the trial court’s decision. The appellate panel found the city didn’t waive its immunity because there was no written contract.
