Miami’s legal community will hold a memorial fundraiser Thursday in memory of the late Miami-Dade Assistant Public Defender Rodney Thaxton, who died 20 years ago of AIDS at 37.

“Rodney was at once a celebration of humanity and an invocation to the nation’s conscience, yet he was touchingly humble, introspective and self-searching,” U.S. Rep. Carrie Meek, D-Miami, said in a tribute published in the Congressional Record on March 29, 1995. “He inspired us all to fight injustice and to give future generations a legacy to preserve and design.”
