Miami lawyer Thomas Pate was constantly concerned about his father, John Pate, living in Venezuela as the country’s economy deteriorated and murder rate rose.

“I was concerned, like thousands of others with family living in Venezuela,” said Pate, an associate at White & Case. “I would ask him if he thought about leaving. He knew that Venezuela was becoming more dangerous. But he loved Venezuela, and he loved Latin America. He wanted to live there despite the risks.”
