By now you’ve likely heard that another major data breach may affect your sensitive personal information. This time, Equifax, Inc., one of the three major credit reporting agencies in the United States, was hit by hackers. Over a period of months, hackers apparently accessed people’s names, Social Security numbers, birthdates, addresses, driver’s license numbers, and in some cases, credit card numbers and personally identifiable information (PII). Although the cybersecurity breach occurred from mid-May through July, it was apparently discovered on July 29. To the chagrin of many people, including government officials, on Sept. 7, Equifax made its first public release warning the American public of the breach.
