The U.S. has formally ratified a convention expected to make it harder for a parent who owes child support to hide abroad.

On Wednesday, the U.S. delivered the signed agreement to The Hague, making it the 33rd nation to ratify The Hague Convention on the International Recovery of Child Support and Other Forms of Family Maintenance. In addition to the U.S., current signatory countries are 27 EU member nations, Norway, Albania, Ukraine, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro. The convention is expected to put more diplomatic and political pressure on officials to cooperate in locating debtor parents, usually fathers, and enforcing support orders.
