A 52-year-old woman died five days after she was admitted to Lawnwood Medical Center in Fort Pierce with an elevated heart rate, high white blood cell count and paranoid psychosis.

A lawsuit over the death of Monise Guerrier stretched into nearly three years of medical malpractice litigation alleging her doctor missed signs of a fatal infection. Lawnwood settled, but Dr. Dwight Dawkins went to trial. Her husband and son sought $15 million in damages, but the doctor received a defense verdict April 20 from a St. Lucie County jury.
