Former Plantation foreclosure lawyer David Stern has been formally disbarred by the Florida Supreme Court.

If Stern is no longer practicing law and doesn't need 30 days to notify clients, the court said Tuesday that it would enter an order making the disbarment effective immediately.

Stern vigorously fought disbarment during trial but did not appeal a ruling by the referee recommending disbarment.

He is no longer practicing law and is investing in fast-food franchises, according to his attorney, Jeffrey Tew of Tew Cardenas in Miami.

At one time, Stern ran the largest foreclosure law firm in the state, processing tens of thousands of foreclosures for the nation's leading banks, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Stern's firm went from handling 9,216 foreclosures in 2006 to 117,796 by 2010. His foreclosure processing company had about 1,200 employees at its peak.

But the law firm bearing his name collapsed in 2011 during an investigation by the Florida attorney general's office into reports of widespread robo-signing and other irregularities.
