Cigarette makers claimed Helen Cohen lived to a ripe old age, but a Palm Beach circuit jury awarded more than $1.2 million in damages to her widower after discounting the comparative fault of the smoker, family attorneys said.

Helen Cohen was 81 when she died of lung cancer in 2006 after smoking for more than 50 years. By 1994, she was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and placed on oxygen.
