In a letter written from a Birmingham, Alabama, jail cell, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." More than 100 years earlier, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation saying slaves deserved to be treated as free men and women.
