Ana Gardiner, a former Broward circuit judge who resigned rather than face a judicial ethics trial, was so depressed over the deaths of her grandmother and father that her judgment was impaired, according to her attorney.

While the Plantation attorney at Cole, Scott & Kissane avoided a full inquiry by the state Judicial Qualifications Commission, Gardiner’s dealings with the prosecutor in a 2007 murder trial she presided over led to a Florida Bar investigation. After many delays, her disciplinary trial began Tuesday before Palm Beach Circuit Judge David Crow.
