Even before Guma Aguiar’s empty boat washed ashore in Fort Lauderdale two months ago, the story of his legal battle with an uncle over a multibillion-dollar oil and gas venture was pretty wild.

In the midst of more than three years of litigation, the uncle, New York businessman Thomas Kaplan, claimed Aguiar engaged in computer hacking and witness intimidation. U.S. District Judge Patricia Seitz in Miami punished Aguiar for his conduct by dismissing his suit against Kaplan over the sale of the energy venture.
