A heavily lobbied measure that would remove a Depression-era “wall” separating the sale of liquor and groceries was approved by the state House on Tuesday by a one-vote margin.

The House took up the Senate-approved version of the proposal (SB 106) after years of debate that pitted the Lakeland-based supermarket giant Publix and small liquor stores against retailers Wal-Mart and Target. It carried 58-57 and was sent to the governor’s desk with a five-year phase-in period.
