The supplement industry is a billion dollar industry, and growing by the day. In fact, over 50 percent of the U.S. population consumes dietary supplements. A few of those million-dollar supplement companies have their headquarters here in Florida. So it’s no surprise that more and more fitness enthusiasts are considering starting their own supplement lines. However, before you start your own supplement company, you have to understand the legalities involved.

First, a dietary supplement is a product that is added to your diet or that contains any of the following ingredients: vitamins, minerals, herbs or botanicals, or amino acids. The Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act, enacted in 1994, states that the primary responsibility of product labeling and consumer safety claims are governed by the Food and Drug Administration. Claims in advertising are directed to the Federal Trade Commission. All supplements must contain a disclaimer that declares “any statements made have not been evaluated by the FDA” and the “product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.”
