Eighteen hours before he was set to testify at trial in a lawsuit over $134,000 in unpaid legal bills, former pop star David Cassidy filed for federal bankruptcy protection in South Florida.

The 64-year-old former teen idol filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Wednesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Fort Lauderdale, where he owns a waterfront home. Cassidy reported debts including a $292,598 mortgage, $39,102 on credit cards, and considerable attorney and accountant fees.
