The Food Safety Modernization Act, Pub. L. No.111-353, 124 Stat. 3885 (2011), encapsulates the most sweeping changes in food safety since President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act as part of the New Deal on June 24, 1938.

FSMA regulates not only the domestic food supply but also expands Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate international entities doing food-related business in the U.S. Additionally, FSMA shifts the focus of federal regulators to a proactive, as opposed to reactive, posture to promote food safety.
