Details: Dale Moyer started smoking cigarettes in 1938 when he was 9. Originally from Pennsylvania, as an adult he moved his family to Florida and lived in Plantation. He was an avid golfer, singer and “all-around gregarious fellow,” said Scott Schlesinger, his attorney. Over the last 20 years of his life, he was impaired by emphysema. He smoked various brands but preferred Newport menthols, a Lorillard brand.
In 2003, Moyer was diagnosed with lung cancer and had it removed with good results. But the loss of lung capacity aggravated his emphysema. He filed suit in 2008 against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Lorillard Tobacco Co. and Liggett Group LLC. Moyer was a member of the disbanded Engle class of Florida smokers who were granted the benefit of a Miami jury’s findings against tobacco companies.
