Justice Lewis Honored For Work On Justice Teaching Program
Florida Supreme Court Justice R. Fred Lewis and Annette Boyd-Pitts, executive director of the Florida Law Related Education Association Inc., are the recipients of the 2014 Sandra Day O'Connor Award for the Advancement of Civics Education.
The award honors an organization, court or individual who promotes, inspires or leads innovation in judicial-related civics education.
Lewis and Boyd-Pitts worked jointly on Florida's Justice Teaching program and other civics education initiatives. Lewis created the program, and Boyd-Pitts developed the teaching materials. Since its inception in 2006, the program has trained more than 4,000 lawyers and judges to teach civics in public schools.
The award is given out by the National Center for State Courts.
"The dual award showcases Justice Lewis' visionary leadership and Pitts' extraordinary implementation of a successful civics education initiative," NCSC president Mary McQueen said.
