President Barack Obama on Wednesday signed the Defend Trade Secrets Act of 2016, which fundamentally overhauls the decades-long tradition of state control of trade secrets lawsuits.

The DTSA, which amends the Economic Espionage Act, passed U.S. Senate review late last month and creates a new federal cause of action (without preempting state laws already on the books) for an entity engaged in interstate commerce (in other words, every business) that suffers a misappropriation of a trade secret.
