Medical marijuana users may have to choose between smoking their pot and keeping their jobs. In a 5-2 decision, the California Supreme Court backed RagingWire Telecommunications Inc. in its firing of plaintiff Gary Ross, denying him relief despite the state's Compassionate Use Act of 1996.

At firms with ‘no jerks’ rules, abusive attorneys need not apply
When a prominent attorney walked into the reception area of a major law firm for an in-person interview, he was certain his lucrative practice and experience at a top tier law school would ensure him a position as a partner in the firm. Impatient with his 10-minute wait, he began pestering the receptionist, insulting her and even calling her names under his breath.
The partners in charge of hiring at the firm arrived, and proceeded with the interview. It seemed likely that the attorney would be offered a position at the firm, until the receptionist detailed her encounter with him to the hiring partners.

Q: I just finished my first year at a very large firm in New York. The partner that I primarily worked for left to go to a smaller, but still AmLaw 100, firm from which I received an offer. The firm I'm at now is "ranked" higher, but I will probably get a little more experience at the other firm. What should I do, stay at the bigger firm or move with the partner?

Thompson & Knight bumps base for first- and second-year associates
Thompson & Knight associates got some welcome news as the firm announced it would join a number of other large Texas-based firms and raise associate base salaries. Effective Aug. 1, first-year associates in Thompson & Knight's domestic offices will be paid a base salary of $160,000 and second-year associates will earn $170,000.
