Pensacola lawyer taking over Florida Bar

Alan Bookman of Pensacola will become The Florida Bar’s 57th president Friday during the Bar’s 2005 annual meeting in Orlando.

Bookman said that during his presidency he wants to concentrate on diversity. “Anywhere lawyers are present, diversity should stay on their radar,” he said. “I want to encourage lawyers of all races, genders, sexual orientations and those with disabilities to get involved and stay involved.”

Henry M. Coxe III of Jacksonville will be sworn in as president-elect on the same day.

State justices schedule summer recess

The Florida Supreme Court announced that it will go into summer recess at the close of business July 8.

No opinions will be released during the recess, which will end Aug. 22. However, the clerk’s office will remain open for filings.

The justices will convene again for oral arguments Sept. 26, unless a critical, time-sensitive matter arises during the recess. If that occurs, the court would convene at the beginning of September.
