leven Broward circuit judges will settle into new digs early next year under a reassignment plan issued by Chief Judge Victor Tobin.
Tobin signed an administrative order reassigning the judges Nov. 5, and the rotations take effect Jan. 11.
Former Chief Judge Dale Ross will move from probate into civil court. Marc Gold, John J. Murphy III and Mily Rodriguez-Powell are moving to civil from criminal. Eileen O’Connor joins the civil bench from domestic violence court.
Ronald Rothschild moves from the civil bench to family court. He said he mentioned to Tobin six to eight months ago that he would be interested in the move if there was an opening. Rothschild said he is a “big believer” in voluntary rotations even though he enjoyed his time in the civil division.
“If one would look at my judicial career, one would see every three to five years I seek a new assignment,” he said. “I find it keeps me fresh.”
Charles Greene will be leaving the complex litigation unit, where he has been hearing tort cases, for the probate division. He will be replaced by Patti Englander Henning, who is in civil court.
Thomas Lynch, who lost a hard-fought election for chief judge to Tobin in 2007, will move from civil to criminal. Judges to be appointed by Gov. Charlie Crist to replace retiring Judges Robert Carney and Linda Vitale will take open spots waiting for them in criminal court.
Lynch and Ross were apparently moved against their wishes.
Gold said he requested a switch to the civil bench after serving in criminal court for 13 years.
“I’d like to see how the other side lives,” he said. He has served on the criminal bench since he joined the court.
Tobin and other judges affected by rotations could not be reached for comment by deadline. |
