June 10, 2003 By Review staff
Four writers for the Daily Business Review and its sister publication Florida Lawyer received five awards at the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2003 Sunshine State Awards, which honor outstanding journalism in the state of Florida.
Delivering a one-two punch in the nondeadline reporting category for small newspapers were Tony Doris and Dan Christensen. Doris won first place for his story “Whither Holland & Knight?” about the law firm’s internal strife over tight finances and management in the wake of former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill McBride’s reign. Christensen took second place for his story “Bush/Bacardi Disclosures,” about Gov. Jeb Bush’s involvement in Bacardi’s legal fight over the Havana Club trademark.
Broward real estate reporter Terry Sheridan captured two second-place awards. In the commentary category for small newspapers she won for her regular column Ground Rules, which covers zoning and growth issues in South Florida. In the business nondeadline reporting category for small newspapers she won for her story, “Pollution Profits,” an in-depth look at issues and complex federal legislation involving the development of polluted land.
Lynn Waddell, a contributor to Florida Lawyer, won a third-place award in the magazine writing category for her story, “Court of No Return,” which discussed the plight of immigrants trying to make their cases to stay in the U.S. in immigration court.
The winners were announced Saturday night at the Fort Lauderdale Airport Hilton.
